Poem: Beloved or Unbeloved

What are you afraid of, girl, tell me?
Tell me, is there any invisible chain binding you from being mine?
I have already drunk the nectar of love you gave me,
look, its whiteness still clings clearly to my lips.
Yet you blame fate!
One must also make an effort oneself.
Tell me, what is the use of always blaming destiny?
If you truly wish to be mine,
then tell me, what objection is there in God’s decree?
If you wish, why would He ignore this prayer,
or send us back empty‑handed?

If you wish, you can be my companion,
or, if you wish, you can slay this lover’s love.
If you wish, you can love,
or you can push me into a sea of neglect.
If you wish, you can be all those reasons
for which my own anger will turn upon myself.

Beloved or unbeloved,
with you lies the free choice of these two wishes.
Now decide girl,
will you burn me in the fire of lovelessness,
or by loving become the nourishment of my soul,
my laughter, my tears, or the whole joy of my life?
Whatever you wish, choose it,
yet do not leave me in cold indifference.
Tell me clearly,
in which waters will you let my life‑boat drift!
