Poem: Desired Beloved

I have seen your flowerlike eyes, so restless,
where the vastness of the universe takes its shelter.
I have known the excuses behind your wish to drift away,
shattering the fragile fence of love’s illusion.
But when it comes to me, even excuses seek excuses,
only to find a way to draw you closer.

I have seen the graceful splendor of your silky hair,
whose hidden fragrance makes silent tears fall.
I have become destitute beneath the weight of your absence,
as a lover’s kiss is the very breath of her beloved’s survival.
And still, why do you search for moments to escape?
I whisper, stay, withdraw not the gift of love.

I have seen your lips, crimson as rose petals,
where the language of longing hides in quiet, unspoken form.
I have rejoiced in claiming you as mine,
like a famished wanderer rejoices, finding on the road
a forgotten note of sudden fortune.

Do not go, remain as my long-desired beloved.
So even in days of fire and ash, I may find you near,
to share with you a sorrow or two,
and still, without hindrance, tell you, I love you.
Love me so deeply, that it feels
I am born again and again, only to return to you.
